MGA formation · One Lime Street, EC3

Everything it takes to stand up an MGA.

Lime Street Consulting Group works with underwriters and entrepreneurs launching a managing general agent. We set out how the model works, structure the business, find the capacity to write against and introduce the technology partners that put it on risk.

01Understand the model
02Build the MGA
03Find the capacity
04Connect the technology
We work with underwriting teams leaving carriers, brokers building an underwriting arm and MGAs entering a new class, across the UK, Ireland and the EEA.
What we do

Four things stand between an idea and a bound risk.

Most launches stall on one of them rather than all four. We work on whichever is unresolved, in the order the market will ask about it.

01

Understand the model

Before anything is committed, we walk through how delegated authority actually works: what a carrier is delegating, what it will hold you to, and what the business has to look like before it will consider you. Most conversations start here.

How delegated authority works in practice
What a carrier underwrites in a new team
Realistic timelines, cost and funding need
Whether the class supports an MGA at all
02

Build the MGA

Company structure, business plan, underwriting strategy and the authorisation route. We write the documents the market will ask for and prepare the team for the questions that follow them.

Business plan and financial model
Legal entity, shareholding and governance
Authorisation or appointed representative route
Underwriting guidelines and controls
03

Find the capacity

Capacity is the constraint on every launch. We take a written proposition to carriers and reinsurers, run the process, and negotiate the binder wording that will govern the program long after signature.

Carrier and reinsurer approach
Commission, profit commission and expenses
Binder wording and authority schedule
Fronting and reinsurance structures where needed
04

Connect the technology

An MGA is a data business from the first policy. We introduce the administration, rating, distribution and bordereaux tooling that suits the class and the size of the book, and stay in the room through selection and implementation.

Policy administration and rating
Distribution and broker access
Bordereaux, reporting and data quality
Vendor selection and implementation

The capacity network

Capacity comes to a proposition, not to a conversation.

We hold relationships across the Lloyd's and company markets, with reinsurers, and with the platforms that let a team write before it is authorised. Which of them fits depends on the class, the data behind it and the experience of the people underwriting.

Discuss your class
Lloyd's syndicatesThrough managing agents with an appetite for new coverholders and the classes they are short of.
Company market carriersUK, Irish and EEA balance sheets writing delegated business, including those new to the model.
Reinsurance-backed structuresWhere a fronting carrier and a reinsurance panel is the practical route to a first binder.
Platforms and incubatorsFor teams that need to write premium before authorisation completes, with a route off the platform later.

Considering an MGA, or stuck partway into one?

A first call covers the class, the team and the capacity available for it, and ends with a plain view on whether the idea is fundable and what the next step involves.
